Callout boxes highlight a part of your text. Each kind has its own colour and is numbered automatically in the order it appears (Example 1, Example 2 ...).

The four boxes

Example
Complete, step-by-step calculations.
Note
A remark or definition to keep in mind.
Hint
A tip that helps solving a problem.
Warning
A common mistake or a limit of validity.

A 2 m steel bar with A = 400 mm² carries an axial load of 50 kN. The normal stress is \(\sigma = F/A = 50\,000 / 400 = 125\,\text{MPa}\).

The normal stress acts perpendicular to the cut section.

Draw the free-body diagram first, then write the equilibrium equations.

\(\sigma = F/A\) gives the average stress; it is not valid near holes, notches or the load application point.

Inserting a box

  1. Place the cursor on an empty line.
  2. Click Example or Note box in the toolbar; Hint and Warning are in the More blocks menu.
  3. Replace the placeholder text with your own. Equations, lists and images can go inside a box.
  4. To continue below the box, click into the empty paragraph after it (one is added automatically).
